The Woodward Stakes

The handicap division has lost many of its top contenders over the past month. Whitney Handicap winner Left Bank took ill after his victory and his racing career is probably over. Street Cry was retired earlier in the week with ankle problems. With many top handicap horses injured or choosing other options to get to The Breeders' Cup it was work to assemble a quality field for the race.

The Woodward Trophies

Six horses faced the starter for The 49th running of The Woodward and favorite Lido Palace was looking to repeat his 2001 victory in the race. Godolphin Stable's Express Tour took the early lead with New England favorite Gander in close pursuit. Gander took a short lead at the top of the stretch. As these two battled it out Lido Palace under Jorge Chavez went wide and gutted it to the line, resulting in an exciting three horse finish. What this race lacked in top names it made up for in excitement.
