Bruce Smith Memorial
As I walked onto the track to record the return of Tom
Maior, winner of the Bruce Smith, I passed by the groom, and offered a congratulations
to her. She informed me that she had worked almost nine years for Bruce
and was beaming with pride at having escorted a winner of a race named in
Bruce's honor. With the help of Sue Walsh I was later able to identify her
as Susie Foley, a long time groom, and a "credit to her
profession"

Tom Maior, the winner of the race, has been making his presence
known in New England since coming here from South Florida. In his last
start, The Sam McCracken Handicap, Tom was able to catch Slippery Gator
at the line. Today, Tom grabbed the lead at the top of the stretch and
then was able to hold off the outside assault of the fast closing Silent
Thunder. With back-to-back stakes wins Tom Maior has a solid shot
at Older Turf Male honors in New England this year.

The Mom's Command
With Sweet Samantha on the farm Suffolk's premiere
race for two-year-old fillies turned into a showdown between Jill's
Layup and Ritzy Dame. The two battled in the early going and were
even at the top of the stretch, where Jill's Layup surged ahead and
went on to an easy six length victory. More coverage of Jill's Layup and
owner Edward Stone on the Mass Bred
Page.

victory over favorite Wellfleet. Mr. Meso, recorded his third win
in four starts, the Despirito being his first stakes win. Mr Meso was
ridden by Winston Thompson and is owned by Laurine Barreira
