The Black-Eyed Susan

Smart and Pretty and Norberto Arroyo (pictured above) crossed the line three-and-one-half lengths in front of Regal Engagement, but the result would not stand. After a review, Smart and Pretty was deemed to have drifted out during the stretch duel causing Ramon Dominguez to take up on Regal Engagement, who was awarded the win. The results were later appealed by Smart and Pretty's connections.

The Hirsch Jacobs Stakes

One of the more impressive wins of Preakness Day was when Darley Stable's Songster cruised to a ten-length victory in this sprint race for three-year-olds. The black Songandaprayer  colt passed the finish line in 1:09.72 only 3/5's of a second off the track record. Songster is trained by Tom Albertrani and was ridden to victory by Edgar Prado.

Maryland Breeders' Cup Sprint Handicap

Friendly Island (inside) provided trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey Garrett Gomez with their second straight stakes victory, winning The Sprint Handicap by three-quarters of a length over Celtic Innis (outside) and Gaff  (center). Off as the 8 to 5 favorite, the five-year-old New York bred son of Crafty Prospector registered his first win of the year.

The William Donald Schaefer Handicap

Stakes win number three for Pletcher and Gomez came in the race before The Preakness when Master Command, a chestnut son of A. P. Indy led at every call to best Andromeda's Hero and Funny Cide. It was the first stakes win for Master Command, who improved his lifetime record to four wins in eight starts, running the mile and an eighth distance in 1:49.42.
