Who was that horse that won the second jewel of the Triple Crown?
Bernardini, (pictured above), received little respect before the
running. They even spelled his name wrong on the saddle cloth. With the devastating
breakdown of Derby winner Barbaro during the race, it seems that the
Darley Stable's color bearer got shortchanged for attention in what was
as strong a performance as Barbaro's Derby. The bay AP Indy colt out of
Cara Rafaela came into the Preakness off a strong win in The Withers
Stakes at Aqueduct in late April. Bernardini will be given a rest and
aimed at mid-summer stakes. Jockey Javier Castellano celebrated his
first Preakness win.
