N.Y. Turf Writers CupHeavy rains all day long had left the turf course like a sponge and officially listed as soft. Even though this was a surface which the heavy favorite It's a Giggle doesn't particularly relish, he was sent off at near even money anyway. Al Skywalker ridden by Tom Foley led the way through most of the two and three-eighths mile marathon over the soggy jumps but was pulled up nearing the last jump on the far side. Favorite It's a Giggle also left the course on the same jump. |

As the early leader and the favorite pulled off the course the lead was taken up by New Zealand bred and raced Zabenz. Zabenz had been up close through the early running and had a five length lead approaching the final jump. After awkwardly negotiating the final hurdle Zabenz and rider Craig Thompson galloped to the wire to post a seven length victory. Zabenz is owned by Michael Watt and is trained by Robert Smerdon. |
