The second major stakes race to be run on Woodward Day was The Grade I  Man o'War. The race again drew a stellar field including Manhattan Stakes winner Denon, Sword Dancer and Bowling Green winner Whitmore's Conn and Balto Star. As the race was about to begin, the gate on Deeliteful Irving broke open and through the quick thinking and bravery of an assistant starter the horse never got loose and nobody was hurt. At the finish line the longest shot on the board 10 to 1 shot Lunar Sovereign romped to en easy three length victory under Richard Migliore.
