The Man O'War StakesThe odds on and sentimental favorite of the New York crowd of 13,106 on Woodward Day was the seven-year-old gray gelding, With Anticipation. In his last two starts the aging wonder had managed to capture two Grade I victories, The United Nations Handicap at Monmouth Park, and The Sword Dancer at Saratoga, in exciting head and neck finishes. Could he make it three in a row? The main competition would surprisingly come from last year's Arkansas Derby winner, Balto Star. |

When the gates opened for this mile and three-eighths marathon jockey Richard Migliore guided Balto Star to the lead and slowed the pace to a crawl. Fractions of 1:16 for six and 1:40 for the mile left the Mig with plenty of horse as they turned for home. Balto Star took off with a burst and it looked like the the four-year old son of Glitterman had stolen the race. With Anticipation had other ideas and blazed past the pace setter in the final yards. The gray gelding will now be aimed toward the Turf Classic on September 29th. |
