The Jockey Club Gold CupNot so long ago this race was It! It being the race that decided it all. The Breeders' Cup Classic of the past. If you wanted to be the champ then you ran in this race. Now a million dollar prep for the Classic, the Gold Cup still always attracts the best the breed has to offer. With older horses Lido Palace, Milwaukee Brew, and Evening Attire, and three-year-old stars Harlan's Holiday and Repent this years edition lost none of its past luster. |

Several years ago New England fans rooted for John Murphy's Formal Gold when he won this race. Mary Grant, a Quincy neighbor of Murphy, decided to breed their broodmare to Formal Gold's sire Black Tie Affair. The result was Evening Attire, a handsome gray who has run well in graded company. In June of this year, Evening Attire ran second to Macho Uno in The Massachusetts Handicap, and later in the summer won the Saratoga Breeders Cup. The Jockey Club Gold Cup became his first Grade I win as he came from off the pace to post an easy victory over Lido Palace. Looks like he will try to duplicate his sire's record and go on to win The Breeders Cup Classic at Arlington Park in Chicago in late October. |
