The Flower BowlWith the timing of the Breeders' Cup in late October, the rich turf races offered during the Belmont Fall Meet offer many chances for European trainers to bring their best and test the waters of American turf racing. Two of the seven who went into the gate for The Flower Bowl were making their first stateside start. Banks Hill, winner of the last year's Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, was scratched because of the soft going caused by the heavy rains on Friday left by the remnants of Isodore. |

The two European entries that did run seemed to relish the soft going. Godolphin Stable color bearer Kazzia went to the lead and made every pole a winning one. Turtle Bow, the second European entry, ran well and was closing fast at the end of the race, just missing by a neck. Turtle Bow's jockey, Christophe Soumillon lost his whip near the eighth pole. As well as Turtle was closing, that mistake may well have cost him the race. |
