Tightened Security

With the Sept. 11th attacks in nearby Manhattan, Breeders' Cup officials made a decision to beef up security. Groups of troopers armed with 40 cal. automatic weapons could be seen at locations around the track. The Breeders' Cup is an event that attracts interest from all over the world and as such could have been considered a prime target for terrorism. Thankfully the day went off without incident.

The Sprint

Many figured the time had come for trainer Bobby Frankel to end his Breeders' Cup winless streak. Fillies Flute and You both went off at near even money and Aptitude also went off as a strong favorite.  Only one of Frankel's runners would get to the winner's circle,  Sprint winner Squirtle Squirt. Off at nearly 10-1 Squirtle Squirt caught  Xtra Heat near the wire.

European horses made it three in a row when Fantastic Light came across the wire first. Fantastic Light was the only post time favorite on the B.C. card to win (or even come in the money). The Godolphin Stable, owners of Fantastic Light, had a great day winning two, and having two second place finishes.

Classic

Last Year's Horse of the Year, and Breeders' Cup Classic winner Tiznow had not been having a really great year. Although he had physical problems early in the year Tiznow managed to win The Santa Anita Handicap in March. With his recent third place finishes in the Woodward and Goodwood, Tiznow went to post at 7 to1. In an exciting finish Tiznow nosed Arc de Triomphe winner Sakhee.
