A full field of talented fillies and mares was on hand
for the fourth running of the newest Breeders' Cup race. Golden Apples and
jockey Pat Valenzuela were made the post time favorites based on consecutive
Grade 1 wins in The Beverly D at Arlington Park and The Yellow
Ribbon at Santa Anita. Also contesting the race were Godolphin Stable's
Flower Bowl winner Kazzia, last years winner Banks Hill and European Group
I winner Islington.
Golden Apple and Pat Valenzuela
Bailey and Lukas had made their presence known a race earlier. Now
it was Bobby Frankel's turn. Ignored by bettors, and sent off at 13 to
1, Frankel owned and trained Starine grabbed the lead at the top of the
stretch and held off Banks Hill to become Frankel's second Breeders Cup
winner in two years. Bobby was also listed as the trainer for second
place finisher Banks Hill.
