The beautiful four-year-old Jade Hunter mare came
into The Distaff with a six race win streak. A victory in this race
assured her older filly honors and depending on the outcome of other
Breeders' Cup races possibly a shot at the top honor, the Eclipse Award
for Horse of the Year. A small but very talented field lined up against
her including talented three-year-olds Farda Amiga, Godolphin Stable's
Imperial Gesture, and Spinster winner Take Charge Lady.
Azeri and Mike Smith head to Post
When the gates opened Azeri went right to the lead, setting blazing
early fractions. After three quarters in 1:09.7 the question was whether
she could hold on for the win. Azeri shook off a challenge from Imperial
Gesture at the top of the stretch and drew off under a vigorous hand
ride to record a five length victory over Farda Amiga. Imperial Gesture
faded to third in late stretch. Jockey Mike Smith enjoyed his first win on
a Breeders' Cup mount since the 1977 Cup. The win was also a first for
trainer Laura DeSeroux with her first Breeders' Cup entry.
