The Alabama

The Alabama is the third race in what is called the Filly Triple Crown. The winner of the first two races, Ogden Phipps' Smuggler was declared from the race because of a high temperature several weeks ago. With Spun Sugar, winner of The Black Eyed Susan, and Sis City, winner of The Ashland Stakes the Alabama still drew a quality field. At the top of the stretch (above photo) Spun Sugar was on the lead as Sis City came up the rail. On the outside Kinsman Stable's Sweet Symphony made her winning move and recorded a six length victory. Sweet Symphony ,a daughter of AP Indy, remained unbeaten, winning her fourth career start and her first graded stakes victory. She was ridden by Jerry Bailey and is trained by Bill Mott.

In an off the turf claiming race, the Michael Gorham trained and owned Wicklow Highland (below inside) held on for a narrow victory over Hunters Tale. The nine-year-old Temperance Hill horse gained his second win in the short Saratoga meet after an allowance start at The Downs in July.
