The Saratoga Breeders' Cup
After Volponi's second place finish in The
Whitney Handicap, trainer Phil Johnson decided a jockey change was in
order and enlisted top jockey Jerry Bailey as the new rider. The skills
of Mr. Bailey were for naught as Volponi finished second again, beaten
by more than three lengths by Joseph Shields' Puzzlement. With Jorge
Chavez in the irons Puzzlement caught front running Iron Deputy at the
three-sixteenth pole and never looked back.

The Alabama Stakes
This year's 123rd running of the historic Alabama had
great advance billing as a match between the Frankel trained Spoken Fur,
who was trying to capture New York's Triple Tiara, and Marylou Whitney's
Kentucky Oaks winner Bird Town. Someone forgot to tell Island Fashion,
winner of the Delaware Oaks. John Velazquez guided the gray Barclay Tagg
trained filly to his fifth winner of the day in an easy six length
victory.
