The 127th Preakness StakesNo one really gave War Emblem a second thought before his win in the Kentucky Derby and he still had many doubters going into the second jewel of the crown, the 127th Preakness Strakes at Pimlico on May 18th. Heavy rains on Friday night had created a muddy start to Preakness Day festivities, but by Pimlico post the maintenance crew had the track in great shape.

In the Derby War Emblem got an early easy lead and was able to lope till the final drive; he wasn't going to have it that easy this time. Menacing Dennis went to the lead and War Emblem assumed the stalking position just behind blistering early fractions. As the field turned for home War Emblem took control. Near the line locally based Magic Wisner was closing ground fast, missing victory by less than a length. |

War Emblem's victory in the Preakness is the second consecutive win in the event for trainer Bob Baffert and owner Prince Ahmed bin Salman's Thoroughbred Corporation. This year's victory enables War Emblem to gain a place in racing history if he can now capture the Belmont Stakes and become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed accomplished the feat in 1978. |
